In the continuing saga of the Corleone crime family, a young Vito Corleone grows up in Sicily and in 1910s New York. In the 1950s, Michael Corleone attempts to expand the family business into Las Vegas, Hollywood, and Cuba.

Superbly written storylines and amazing performances from the principal actors, including Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Diane Keaton, is why THE GODFATHER PART II is considered a masterpiece. It is often called the best of the Godfather trilogy. Given its presence in hip hop and general pop culture, children might want to see this movie. Yet, as a result of violent material, parents might want to think twice before letting them do so.

The movie has the unmistakable atmosphere of a saga as it goes back and forth through time, juxtaposing Michael’s emotional struggle with getting a lie to that of his dad’s apparently effortless rise to power. In doing this, Francis Ford Coppola is able to keep an amazing balance of powerful character-driven stories peppered with the ruthless violence we expect from a gangster movie.

As opposed to simply glorifying the mafia don’s ranking, THE GODFATHER PART 2 introduces a guy who’s tortured by his name. Michael is pained, seeing his occupation tear his family apart. At one stage, he asks his mother if his dad had the same psychological issues. “How was his mind?” He asks. Unlike Tony of the Sopranos, Michael doesn’t find psychotherapy; instead, he uses violence and revenge to address his difficulties. Not anyone, including relatives, dares cross him in his quest to build the family, as he won’t endure the slightest piece of disloyalty.
