70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin.
THE INTERN wears its very major heart on its own (stylish) sleeve, and it is none the worse for this. Hathaway is winning as Jules, a woman who may be on the edge of a nervous breakdown but is so hot that you can not help but love her despite her flaws. She meets her match at Ben, depicted by De Niro with such warmth you can not help but love him, also. The movie isn’t without its defects, including a stunning lack of diversity for a movie set in NYC and an oversimplified exploration of the challenges of juggling work and marriage. However, Meyers deserves credit for tackling this thorny subject — including the exhausted but sadly still existing tug-of-war between stay-at-home moms and working mothers — and introducing a nuanced approach to marital challenges. Ditto for attempting to portray a successful young businesswoman who’s neither cut-throat nor ineffective, only overwhelmed and wanting to locate herself in the process, too.
